Post Metal in the movies?
on: December 3rd

It’s been an on going thing now for some time, but recently I noticed that there is a lot more metal going into movies and shows. A few examples:

The movie ‘Spun’ about a bunch of speed junkies. In it there is a metal head junkie while bonging on in his room in watching the Satyricon ‘Mother North’ vid.

I was watching the Sopranos the other day and the son was asking to see a Mudvayne concert.

Has anyone else seen much of the same?

Gummo comes to mind first and foremost. Fucking horrendously strange movie, but the soundtrack includes Burzum, Mystifier, Bathory, Bethlehem, and fucking SLEEP.

Jarmusch’s Broken Flowers also has a shortened version of Sleep’s Dopesmoker that’s used during the travelling scenes.

It’s kinda cool in a way to see metal-related stuff in movies/TV, whether it be just the music for a particular scene, or a metalhead character, or even setting a scene in a metal gig [Cannibal Corpse in Ace Ventura for example] because being a fan of such things, it’s something you can easily relate to.

Although one thing that does annoy me is when they have characters cast as metalheads, they always seem to be very stereotypical and are often portrayed as being stupid, or to the other extreme, being viewed as psychotic or evil.

I’m a metal drummer in a hard rock band: Unbroken Expanse from Tennant Creek.
Favourite bands: Slayer, Megadeth, Testament, Obituary, Behemoth, Dethklok, Iron Maiden, DevilDriver…

In Zombieland, they play Metallica in the opening credits.

Also, in an episode of friends, there’s a running joke about how Jennifer Anniston’s character wants to let Carcass play at her wedding.

17 years old. Play in a band called Crassic Park and starting up Gorechasm. Been playing guitar for 6 years.

As a Sopranos junkie I noticed another one…..but this one was a little more random and not what I expected to see on it at all.

The son had an Ulver poster in his room. That front cover from Natterns Madrigal. Strange.

I watched the movie “Shoot ‘Em Up” again the other day, it has quite a bit of metal in it. I think there is some Wolfmother (not really metal) as well as a bit of Crue, but the highlight is Strapping Young Lad on MTV or something, and when that channel is on the baby stops crying, change the cahnnel and he starts crying again. The kid loves metal…

Awesome movie too if you haven’t seen it – just does take it too seriously!

In Shoot ‘em Up I recall when he was switching channels to make the baby stop crying, I’m pretty sure it was some old Sepultura. Territory or Dead Embryonic Cells or something.

It’s definitely SYL – the song is “Zen”.

Another film that comes to mind – “The Wrestler” had a fair bit of 80′s cock rock throughout it.

Did anyone ever hear about a porno that was going to feature some members of Dark Funeral, and have their music as the soundtrack? I recall reading about it, but dont know if it ever got made…

Helmet had a song called Monochrome at the end of one of the saw movies.

I also remember slipknot had a song in one of the Resident Evil’s too…. (not 100% sure it was resident evil but it was zombies n shit)
